This month’s theme is Citizenship, which is perfect for celebrating Independence Day, participating in a march or protest, organizing for a cause you support, or learning about your local or national government. Girls will earn their citizenship badge and be prepared to get involved, help others, and make the world a better place through earning these official, front-wearable retired badges.

about the badge of the month series
Each month, I put together a customized activity plan around a theme, based on the official requirements for retired badges. (see more of them here) Where possible, I try to maximize the ways you can customize to your troop, especially if you have a mixed level troop. And, I choose badges that are plentiful in the shop, so there’s enough for your whole troop (while supplies last, so shop early!).
about the citizenship badges
Girls have the opportunity to make the changes they want to see in their communities, but it can be overwhelming to even know how to start. These badges give girls practice in seeing problems and taking action. I’ve selected Junior – Active Citizen/Model Citizen (it’s been renamed over the years, but the subject is the same) and Brownie – Citizen Near and Far to represent this important theme. I’ve also included a separate guide from Badge Explorer for all levels to participate.
Do you need a machine? (yes!)
This is my #1 top recommendation. The features for the affordability can’t be beat. Today’s sewing machines – like this one – are automated and much easier to use. Badges are one and done, guaranteed!

The attached activity plan (click Download button below) is a free activity guide for the Brownie and Junior badges for this month. Scroll down for options for more levels. These activities are based on or adapted from the official requirements written and published by GSUSA. Badges should be earned in the spirit of the topic, and with an emphasis on being prepared to serve others. You are free to adapt the requirements to your needs, budget, supplies, and so on. Your troop leader has the final say on determining if/when a badge has been earned.
