Hello, I’m Shannon, The Badge Fairy. Thanks for hanging out here with me and learning about what I do.
This website lives by one little rule:

Solutions and services to make your scouting life easier
Projects and tips to increase your confidence and ease at sewing.
This website started in July 2017, but its true origin goes back about two years before that. Here’s my daughter Cupcake as a brand new Daisy. Isn’t she cute!?
Really though, it probably traces back to about 1988. Can you guess which one is me?
I’ve always embraced the meaning of Girl Scouts – that girls can do anything. I was so excited to have my daughter join up. After her first troop meeting, I realized a lot (and I mean A LOT!) had been added in 30 years. I was totally behind! I dove in, joining ALL the Facebook groups for Girl Scout moms. My favorite is the one I run for fans of the The Badge Fairy. Join us! It turns out my daughter dove in too. She loves scouts, loves her leaders and her troopmates. She quickly sold about 2,500 boxes of cookies in her first two years (as of 2020, her total boxes sold is nearly 5,000!) has attended great field trips, gone camping many times, done several community service projects, and has already tried so many new things!
And the busier she got, the more the patches piled up. (You know how this goes, right?) She kept coming home with more and more patches. At the same time, across the scouting groups in social media, I started to notice the frequency of some of the same questions…
“How do I get these darn patches to STAY on this darn uniform!?”
“WHY doesn’t the iron-on really stay ironed on!?”
“What MAGIC product will solve all my problems!?” (hint: there isn’t one)
And from that, The Badge Fairy was born.
I was prepared to help make the world a better place. I had dabbled in some sewing on and off, following patterns to make baby dresses and fun things, like her awesome Rey costume!
So it was natural for me to start sewing her uniform stuff. And before long, friends and troopmates were asking for help. After that, my advice in those facebook groups started taking off. And as it turns out, I knew what I was doing and other people found it helpful. Now, this has grown — I offer mail-in sew-on services to anyone, anywhere, create fun little hacks for your uniform problems, teach sewing badge workshops locally in St. Louis), and lots more!

Meanwhile, I spent 20 years working in science education – at museums, zoos, botanical gardens, science centers, research institutes, and universities. My training as a scientist (more on that below) and educator has prepared me with the skills to generate interesting badge-earning ideas, create and teach sewing badge workshops, find connections for multi-level troops, and build a successful retired badge shop on Facebook. I even invented the Girl Sprouts vest and have built a program for your youngest scouts-to-be.
Sewing is the ultimate STEAM activity!
It surprises people that my background is in science. I’ve always been good at science and math and even went to graduate school in biology! And for some, science and art are at odds. But — you certainly can’t make a princess gown without some geometry. There comes a point in every sewist’s life when she’s gotta take her machine apart and put it back together again – that’s scary, but once you do it the first time it gets a lot easier. And, one of the best features of my BabyLock Katherine sewing machine is her ability to program embroidered stitches. I use this feature in my sewing badge workshops for all ages. Sewing is empowering – I’ve built a successful business based entirely on the fact that I can sew and a lot of people haven’t learned to yet. (I don’t like the words, “I can’t.” Sure you CAN – you just haven’t learned yet!)

I think it’s true that sometimes you just have to jump in and hope for the best. Even when I’ve done all my homework, even when I’m confident in what I’m doing, and even knowing that people find my work has value, it’s still sometimes scary to put all this out there. I appreciate the growing Badge Fairy community for helping me see that this is important and should keep going on and on. Thank you for reading. I hope you stick around.
